A time-honoured celebration of maple season
Sugar Shack
The AFFNO Sugar Shack is one of the most beloved events in Northwestern British Columbia. Inspired by traditional Québec sugar shacks, it celebrates Francophone culture through a large community brunch and family-friendly activities. During this festive day, participants enjoy a classic Québec-style menu: pancakes, baked beans, ham, tourtière, omelettes, maple syrup, and of course the famous maple taffy on snow. The warm atmosphere is enhanced by Francophone music, performances, children’s activities, and sometimes cultural or artisan demonstrations.
The Sugar Shack attracts Francophones, Francophiles, local families, and many curious visitors, creating an open, welcoming, and vibrant community gathering. The event allows AFFNO to showcase the French language and strengthen connections among communities across the region. It’s also a great opportunity for French immersion schools, local artists, and community organizations to take part in the celebration and share their work.
Beyond the meal itself, it is a moment of sharing, discovery, and celebration of traditions from near and far. The Sugar Shack perfectly embodies AFFNO’s spirit: bringing people together, welcoming everyone, and offering an authentic taste of Francophone culture—even far from Québec’s maple groves.
